In the same place.
Privacy
Last updated 27 September 2026. Ibidem is run by Ryonix Labs Inc.
The short version. Reading Ibidem needs no account. There is no
advertising, and nothing is sold to anyone. We use Google Analytics to count visits, and that
is the only thing here that watches you at all.
Reading the map
- A random device id. The first time you open Ibidem your browser generates a random
identifier and keeps it in local storage. It is not linked to your name, your email or your
device's hardware. It exists so a story can only be voted for once from one browser, and so
your stamps and saved stories come back when you return.
- Your settings. Light or dark, which layers you have on, and which one-time tips you
have already seen. These stay in your browser and are never sent anywhere.
- Your location, on your device. If you allow it, your browser's location is used to
centre the map and to work out how far away a story is. That calculation happens in the page.
Simply looking at the map does not send your position anywhere.
- Your location, sent to us — only when you act. When you stamp a place, leave a
bottle, leave a mark or bury a capsule, your coordinates and their accuracy are sent to our
server with your device id, because the whole point of those features is that you were standing
there. If you never use them, we never receive a position.
- Places you search. A place name you search may be sent to our facts service, which
uses Google Gemini to write the notes shown while the map loads. Only the place name is sent —
never your position, your device id, or anything about you. The result is stored so nobody has
to generate it again.
Writing on the desk
Writers sign in at desk.ibidem.app with Google, Apple or an email address, through our
authentication provider, Supabase. We receive your email address, and the name and profile
picture your provider chooses to share. We never receive your password. Stories you publish
are public, and carry your name as the byline.
Who else handles it
- Supabase — the database and sign-in, hosted in the EU (eu-west-1).
- Cloudflare — hosting, and storage for the landmark drawings.
- Google — Analytics on every page, sign-in if you choose it, and Gemini for the
loading notes (place names only).
- Apple — sign-in if you choose it.
- Stripe — if you buy anything. Card details go to Stripe and never reach us.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics (property G-CLPBNZK3Q6) to see how many people visit and which pages
they open. It records the page you are on, a rough location worked out from your IP address, your
browser and device type, and the site you arrived from. It sets cookies in your browser to tell
one visit from the next. That data goes to Google and is subject to
their privacy policy.
It is not connected to anything else here. Your position on the map, the stories you read, your
device id and your writer account are never sent to Google Analytics. If you would rather not be
counted, any tracker blocker will stop it, as will Google's own
opt-out add-on.
Beyond that there are no advertising networks and no other third-party trackers in Ibidem. We
do not sell or rent personal information, and we never have.
How long it is kept
Votes, stamps and anything you leave on the map are kept while the map carries them.
A writer account is kept until you ask for it to be removed. Server request logs at our
hosting providers expire on their own schedules.
Your choices
- Refuse or revoke location permission in your browser at any time. The map falls back to a
default view and everything else still works.
- Clearing your browser's storage for ibidem.app erases the device id, your settings and the
link to your votes and stamps.
- Delete your account yourself, from Your places in the app or on the web — see
how, and what goes with it. You can also ask for a copy of what is
held about you, or ask for it to be deleted, by emailing the address below. Deleting a writer account removes the account; published stories may stay on the
map without your name unless you ask for them to be removed too.
Children
Ibidem is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information
from them.
